Description:

Do you have unaltered barn cats and/or feral cats around your home? Are you a resident of Winnebago County? If yes, please consider taking part in Winnebago County Animal Service’s TNR Initiative.

Trap-Neuter-Return or TNR is a humane and effective method for managing feral and stray cats populations. The cats are trapped and brought to WCAS where they are then spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, microchipped, and ear-tipped. The cats are then returned back to their original territory. Cats that are judged by our veterinary staff to have a sickness or injury that makes return inhumane may unfortunately be euthanized.

We know that there are community organizations in our region that have had active TNR programs for years. Our goal at WCAS is to continuously improve our service to the residents of Winnebago County. Since October of 2019 we have begun to take an active role by making dozens of TNR surgery spots available to community members willing to transport unowned outdoor cats to us for the service.

Winnebago County Animal Services is designating a set number of appointments for unaltered and unowned feral and/or barn cats on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Barn and/or feral cats trapped and transported to WCAS by community members will be altered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ear-tipped at no cost. The resident who trapped and transported the cats can then pick them up at the end of the surgery day, after they are recovered, for return to the location where they were trapped. Please contact WCAS at 815-319-4140 or bhanson@wincoil.us to schedule your TNR appointment.
